5 Home Remedies For Sore Throat

Seasonal cold and flu is a common thing. As and when season changes from hot to cold, or cold to hot, a lot of people get affected by flu. Sore throat is one of the symptoms of flu. Instead of popping antibiotics, you can try some easy home remedies.

Sore throat means pain, irritation, or itchiness of throat. Pain in throat is the primary symptom of sore throat. If not treated in time, it may get worse and pose difficulty in swallowing too.

These home remedies for sore throat are simple and effective. Try them and say goodbye to pain and cough.

  1. Baking Soda Gargle

One of the most common home remedies for sore throat is salt water gargle. It is effective in soothing your throat and relieving pain. Gargling with a solution of hot water and salt will reduce swelling and keep your throat clean from mucus. Adding a pinch of baking soda to the solution will kill bacteria and prevent growth of yeast and fungi which causes infection and pain.

Mix ¼ tsp baking soda and ½ tsp salt with 1 cup warm water. Gargle with this solution in gentle swishing motion every 3 hours to minimize the symptoms of sore throat.

  1. Honey and Ginger

Honey is known for its anti-bacterial properties. It is also a great healer. Having honey mixed with warm water will soothe your throat pain. You can also have honey ginger tea. A recent study conducted concluded that honey was even more effective at taming cough than various common cough suppressants.

Mix 4 tbsp honey + 1 tsp ginger juice + pinch of black pepper to form a smooth paste. Have 1 tsp of this concoction 3 times a day and you’ll feel great relief in your throat pain.

  1. Licorice Root Tea

Licorice or Mulethi, as it is popularly known in India, is known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties. It helps reduce irritation and swelling, and also soothes the mucus membrane of your throat.

You can easily buy tea with licorice extracts and drink it. Or you can even brew it at home. Mixing licorice root with chamomile tea can work wonders to relive sore throat. Here’s how you can make licorice tea at home.

Ingredients –

  • 1 cup dried licorice roots, chopped
  • ½ cup cinnamon chips
  • 2 tbsp whole cloves
  • ½ cup chamomile flowers (you can use chamomile tea instead)
  • Sugar as per taste

Method –

  • In a pan add 2.5 cups of water and bring it boil.
  • Add all the dry ingredients and sugar as per required. Let it simmer for 7-10 minutes.
  • Strain it into a large mug and enjoy this heavenly treat.

If you’re pregnant or are breastfeeding, then you should avoid this remedy.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

It’s a known fact that how good apple cider vinegar for your health is. ACV is also very beneficial for your hair and skin. But did you know that apple cider vinegar is a great home remedy to cure sore throat? The high-level of acidity helps to kill bacteria efficiently. And when you mix it with honey, it becomes all the more soothing for your throat.

Mix 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar and 1 tbsp honey in warm water and slowly sip this liquid.

  1. Suck on garlic cloves

It might sound a bit weird, but sucking garlic cloves can be greatly beneficial to soothe your sore throat. Garlic is known for its natural antibacterial properties. It contains allicin, a compound that fights infections and germs causing pain and irritation.

You can place one clove of garlic on each side of your mouth and keep sucking it, just like a cough drop tablet. Occasionally crush it between your teeth to release more juice! And don’t forget to brush your teeth right after.

Apart from these home remedies, here are some other ways to soothe a sore throat:

  1. Take steam

If you have a blocked nose, throat congestion, or sore throat due to dryness, then taking steam can be greatly helpful. It’ll clear your nose and help you breathe easily.

Boil water in a pan and transfer it into a large bowl. Lean over the bowl and cover your head with a towel. Make sure you’re able to fully inhale the steam. You can also add a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the water. Make sure you do it very carefully.

  1. Use Cayenne pepper

Cayenne pepper has a compound called capsaicin, which is effective in temporarily relieving pain. The discomfort of your throat is diluted when you have cayenne pepper. Add ½ tsp cayenne pepper powder to 1 cup boiling water. Stir in 1 tbsp honey and wait till the mixture is warm.

Make sure to stir the liquid frequently, as cayenne pepper tends to settle down. Keep sipping the warm liquid to reduce throat pain and irritation.

  1. Taking Rest is very important

Usually when you have a sore throat, you tend to overlook it and keep working. The stress and exertion can worsen it. Take a day off and give yourself some rest. Also make sure to drink as much fluids as possible. Water, herbal tea, honey ginger tea, coconut water, juice, are some of the many choices. Just make sure to stay away from caffeine and alcohol.

You can drink soothing chamomile tea to ease off the throat pain. The components present in chamomile tea kill bacteria and prove to be a natural pain killer. The tea also has a relaxing and calming effect, just what you need when you’re not feeling well.
